Can you help with slash chords?

I'm starting to get a little more comfortable with my basic chords - triads, 7ths mostly. I have a piece of sheet music I'm working on right now that has a lot of slash type chords, like Gm/C and more. Can you shed any light on this? I'd appreciate it very much...
