Do you suppose that the first day of a "baking for beginners" class would have you pulling "Baked Alaska" out of the oven with those mitts before the session was over?

Anything's possible, I suppose, but I think many would agree that the odds are not likely. Not being a professional baker myself, I'm thinking that the discussion would gravitate to some basics. Actually, I'm not sure how many classes one would have to endure before being ready to create that flaming classic.

What's wrong with basics anyhow? A little flour, egg, water, sugar... etc... yumm! (okay, something like that).

Anyway, just because you may not be familiar with those pro piano chords (yet) doesn't mean you can't sound good!

There's a lot you can achieve with those triads and 7th chords, you know. You might be familiar with an old saying that goes like this: "It's not what you say but how you say it."

The point is this: whatever level your chord understanding and skill level is at right now, accept it, use it to your potential, and of course keep your eyes looking forward to and your enthusiasm high for learning some new things.

If you're accustomed to playing triads (Cmaj, Amin, Gaug, Edim, etc.), then take those triads and use them in the context of some songs. If you have some sheet music that provides chord symbols, get started! Now, if the music calls for a lot of 7th chords, don't let that stop you. Instead, let it motivate you! First, play triads instead of the 7th chords. For example, let's say that the chord progression read like this:

Cmaj7 A-7 Fmaj7 D-7 G7 Cmaj7

Simply take off that 7 and play:

Cmaj A- Fmaj D- G (which is Gmaj) Cmaj

("min" and "-" are both minor chords, just in case you needed to know)

Also, while you're having some fun putting those triads to work by playing them in context, encourage yourself to familiarize yourself with some of those 7th chords. An easy way to do so is here if you're interested.

Also, learn some of those chord inversions and use them in your playing. Here's a program that gets you to do that and achieve some great sounds even if your chord knowledge currently consists of three chords!

Now, let's suppose you're at a point (now or in the future) where you're feeling pretty okay with those 7th chords... and you're experiencing success with using them in your songs. It's likely that you're inspired to achieve more of a professional effect. After all, it's human nature... the more we know, the more we want to know... and improvement is always an innate desire. Okay, so take the next turn in the road by acquainting yourself to some of those pro piano chords the piano stylists use. Hey, those fancy chord sounds they play only sound like "magic" because might not be familiar with how to achieve them yet. What's great is that, once you know, the mystery is gone but the "magic" still seems to be there because you're actually producing these sounds yourself and liking what you're hearing! In addition, your enthusiasm for learning more is always there and your capacity for creativity expands more and more! Consider getting involved with ProProach to become familiar with how to play many of these pro chord sounds. You'll not only learn how to play some great chord effects, but you'll also learn how to incorporate them into your favorite songs. That's one of the characteristics of this program that's so special.

Okay, just so you understand, the journey doesn't stop there... no way! As a matter fact, once you get involved with that program and take yourself through the 25 lessons, you're going to want to experience it again... and again! Each time will lead you to making newer discoveries... isn't learning music super??!!! You be it is.

Okay, so there are three main points to these words:

1) Accept and appreciate where you're at in terms of understanding and skill level

2) Apply what you know in the context of music at whatever level you're at

3) Be enthusiastic for learning more

What's left to do? Just one thing: take action beginning now! Let's stroll over to those keys and make them talk!

Remember...

Always...

ALWAYS...

PLAY WITH PASSION!

Musically,

Dave
