Understanding time signatures does not have to be a mind-boggling affair. Actually, if you want time signatures explained in simple terms, click here.

The good news is that once you understand how one works, you've got the formula in place and the rest are easy. For example, if you know that the signature 2/4 represents two beats per measure and that a quarter note gets one beat, then you know what the numbers represent. So, quite simply, the top number tells you how many beats are in each measure, and the bottom number lets you know what type of note (quarter note, eighth note, etc) gets one beat.
